Train clients to build their own tools with Grok: price and plan
Clarity HQ · "AI taking over jobs? Make AI work for you" · Research and plan written Sat 24 Oct 2026 (UK). Nothing has been bought, booked, posted or launched.
How to read this: facts from the web have a source link. Anything marked Suggestion or Estimate is our own idea, not a market figure. Prices are as published on each site on 24 Oct 2026. Some include VAT and some don't, and each one says which.
The short version
- The training costs about the same as other UK AI training, and it suits nervous beginners and sole traders. Comparable UK trainers charge £49–£200 an hour for 1-to-1 help, £25–£125 a person for group sessions and £40–£89 a month for memberships (sources below).
- The "leave with a working tool" angle is rarer than general "learn ChatGPT" training. Most UK AI courses teach prompting. The ones that teach app building tend to be online, take several weeks, and are aimed at tech or product people. Examples are Hustle Badger at £399 + tax for 4 weeks and Enterprise4All at 8 weeks, which is funded in England only.
- Free competition exists in Fife. Business Gateway Fife, The Data Lab and the Scottish AI Alliance all run free AI awareness sessions. Ours has to be hands-on and personal ("you build your tool today"), not another talk.
- Clients will need to pay for some tools themselves. Grok has a free plan, but its limits are low. Grok Bot needs the Premium plan at $30 a month plus VAT, which shows as £30/month in the UK App Store. Hosting a simple tool can be free on Cloudflare Pages.
- Suggestion: offer this as the main "Make AI work for you" product and keep done-for-you builds as the upgrade. Pilot it with 3 people before advertising.

2. Demand signals
- ONS (July 2026): 28% of businesses with 0–9 staff use at least one AI technology. Use is lower in some trades, for example 13% in construction. Lack of expertise, cost and "difficulty identifying use cases" are the main barriers. Training existing staff is the most common response, but only 11% of firms with 10+ staff have trained more than half their staff. ons.gov.uk/businessindustryandtrade/business/…
- ONS, same release: 55% of employees say they use AI for work or education, compared with about 35% of businesses (10+ staff). People are experimenting on their own, which suits a "build your own" offer.
- The earlier research (REPORT.md) found that about two-thirds of small firms using AI build some tools themselves (Pax8 survey via The Next Web). thenextweb.com/news/shadow-ai-small-businesse…
- Fife events show local interest. Fife Business Week runs 2–6 Nov 2026 and includes a practical AI workshop with SMAS. bgateway.com/news/connect-grow-thrive-at-fife… InvestFife's "Automate to Accelerate" is on 3 Nov 2026 in Glenrothes. eventbrite.co.uk/e/automate-to-accelerate-lea…
- Our reading (Suggestion): demand for general AI awareness is being met free by public bodies. The gap is hands-on, personal, "make one useful thing for my business" help, delivered locally, in person, without jargon.
3. Funding in Scotland and Fife that could pay for training

4. What Grok costs a client to build with (be honest about this)
From the official pricing page x.ai/pricing (prices exclude VAT; US dollar list prices):
| Plan | Price | What matters for building |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited chat, agent requests and Grok Build |
| Plus | $8/month | Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine and Build, plus API access, from a shared usage pool |
| Premium | $30/month | Grok Bot, 4× Plus usage, cloud agents and automations, code hosting |
| Super / Ultra | $100 / $200 a month | 15× / 50× usage. Not needed for beginners |
- UK prices: UK App Store listings show Premium at about £30/month and Super at about £100/month. opentherank.com/ai-pricing/grok/ One UK guide converts Premium to about £23 before VAT (about £27 with VAT) when bought on the web. aiagents.org.uk/grok-bot/
- Limits: usage comes from one pool shared across Grok and Cursor that refreshes weekly. When it runs out, you either wait or buy top-ups (x.ai/pricing). Third-party models in Cursor cost extra. One UK guide warns that merged plans can't be split again later. aiagents.org.uk/grok-bot/
- Hosting: a simple one-page tool can go on a free Cloudflare Pages account in the client's own name. cloudflare.com/plans/developer-platform/
- Suggestion: tell every client before they book: "You can start free. Most people will want Plus ($8/month + VAT). Grok Bot needs Premium (about £30/month in the App Store). You pay Grok directly, we don't resell it, and you can cancel any time." xAI says it does not allow resellers (x.ai/pricing), so never resell or share logins.

6. Session outlines (Suggestion)
Build Your First Tool (2 hours, 1-to-1)
Before: a 10-minute phone or email check covering what eats their time, what device they use, and whether they have a Grok account (if not, we set up a free one together, and they type their own password).
1. 0:00–0:15 Calm start. What AI is and isn't. The 3 rules: no customer personal data in prompts, always check the answer, and you stay in charge.
2. 0:15–0:30 Pick ONE tool. Choose from a menu: price or quote calculator, "what's included" FAQ page, booking-request form, checklist app, or social post helper.
3. 0:30–1:15 Build it together. They type and we guide. Describe it in plain English, ask Grok for a single web page, test it on their phone, fix things with follow-up prompts.
4. 1:15–1:35 Put it live. Free hosting on their own account, a link on their phone home screen, and a QR code.
5. 1:35–1:50 Make it theirs. Change prices or wording without help, and save their "recipe prompt".
6. 1:50–2:00 Next steps. A 1-page sheet, 14 days of email help, and the Build Club and done-for-you options (no hard sell).
Build-Along Afternoon (3 hours, group of up to 6)
- Welcome (20 min): introductions and "one job you'd love to get rid of".
- Live demo (20 min): build a tool for a made-up business, e.g. "Puffin Lane Hair Studio" (made up).
- Build 1 (60 min): everyone builds their own tool from a recipe card, with the trainer going round the room.
- Break (10 min).
- Build 2 (40 min): improve it, test it on a phone and put it live.
- Show and tell (20 min) plus safety rules, costs and next steps (10 min).
7. What you would need
- Time (Estimate): about 3.5 hours per 1-to-1 including prep and follow-up, so £195 works out at roughly £55/hour. About 5 hours per group afternoon. About 2 hours a month to run the Build Club.
- Materials: a laptop, a spare tablet or phone for testing, mobile hotspot backup, printed recipe cards, a 1-page "how to change it" sheet, 3 demo tools for made-up businesses (the salon receptionist and takeaway demos already help), a booking page and a feedback form.
- Insurance: public liability plus professional indemnity. Quoted examples for sole-trader consultants and trainers are about £55–£120 a year (Simply Business example: training consultant, £1m PL, £61.60 a year). simplybusiness.co.uk/business-insurance/consu… · professionalsaver.co.uk/consultants-insurance…
- Terms (Suggestion): short booking terms covering: what's included, 48-hour reschedule and cancellation, no guarantee of business results, the client owns their accounts and tools, the client pays their own AI or hosting subscriptions, never share passwords with the trainer, no customer personal data in AI prompts, and liability capped at the fee. A freelancer template costs about £30 (see REPORT.md).
- Data protection: check whether the ICO data protection fee applies once client contact details are being held. ico.org.uk/for-organisations/data-protection-…
- VAT: registration is only required above £90,000 turnover. gov.uk/vat-registration/when-to-register
- Venue (Suggestion): use community centre or library rooms in Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes or Dunfermline, booked per session. Get quotes first. No figure is assumed here.
8. Risks
- Grok costs and limits change, and clients blame us. Plans were merged in October 2026 and could change again. The free plan is limited and Grok Bot needs Premium. Fix: state client costs up front, teach tool-agnostic skills, and keep a plan B (for example, the tool is plain HTML any AI can edit).
- "Leave with a working tool" doesn't happen in 2 hours, especially for nervous beginners or slow Wi-Fi, which leads to unhappy clients and unpaid extra time. Fix: only offer a fixed menu of 5 simple tool types, prepare beforehand, and offer a free 30-min top-up if it's not live by the end.
- Free public alternatives (Business Gateway, The Data Lab, Scottish AI Alliance) and cheap online courses mean people may not pay. Fix: be hands-on, personal and local, refer people to the free help for general awareness, and sell the "your own tool, today" result.
- Data and safety mistakes. Clients may paste customer data into AI or build something that collects personal data. Fix: the 3 rules in every session, no tools that store customer data in beginner sessions, and an Article 28 data clause for done-for-you work.
- Your time and energy: one person can only deliver so many sessions. Fix: group sessions and the Build Club scale better than 1-to-1s.
